An assessment of stingless beehive climate impact using multivariate recurrent neural networks

    Get PDF
A healthy bee colony depends on various elements, including a stable habitat, a sufficient source of food, and favorable weather. This paper aims to assess the stingless beehive climate data and examine the precise short-term forecast model for hive weight output. The dataset was extracted from a single hive, for approximately 36-hours, at every seven seconds time stamp. The result represents the correlation analysis between all variables. The evaluation of root-mean-square error (RMSE), as well as the RMSE performance from various types of topologies, are tested on four different forecasting window sizes. The proposed forecast model considers seven of input vectors such as hive weight, an inside temperature, inside humidity, outside temperature, outside humidity, the dewpoint, and bee count. The various network architecture examined for minimal RMSE are long short-term memory (LSTM) and gated recurrent units (GRU). The LSTM1X50 topology was found to be the best fit while analyzing several forecasting windows sizes for the beehive weight forecast. The results obtained indicate a significant unusual symptom occurring in the stingless bee colonies, which allow beekeepers to make decisions with the main objective of improving the colony’s health and propagation

Lightweight IoT middleware for rapid application development

Sensors connected to the cloud services equipped with data analytics has created a plethora of new type of applications ranging from personal to an industrial level forming to what is known today as Internet of Things (IoT). IoT-based system follows a pattern of data collection, data analytics, automation, and system improvement recommendations. However, most applications would have its own unique requirements in terms of the type of the smart devices, communication technologies as well as its application provisioning service. In order to enable an IoT-based system, various services are commercially available that provide services such as backend-as-a-service (BaaS) and software-as-a-service (SaaS) hosted in the cloud. This, in turn, raises the issues of security and privacy. However there is no plug-and-play IoT middleware framework that could be deployed out of the box for on-premise server. This paper aims at providing a lightweight IoT middleware that can be used to enable IoT applications owned by the individuals or organizations that effectively securing the data on-premise or in remote server. Specifically, the middleware with a standardized application programming interface (API) that could adapt to the application requirements through high level abstraction and interacts with the application service provider is proposed. Each API endpoint would be secured using Access Control List (ACL) and easily integratable with any other modules to ensure the scalability of the system as well as easing system deployment. In addition, this middleware could be deployed in a distributed manner and coordinate among themselves to fulfil the application requirements. A middleware is presented in this paper with GET and POST requests that are lightweight in size with a footprint of less than 1 KB and a round trip time of less than 1 second to facilitate rapid application development by individuals or organizations for securing IoT resources

Comprehensive simulation of adjustable welding jig through ASIE model in refrigeration and air conditioning workshop

Welding job involves a number of different tools and it is very common to use welding jigs on a project due to their strength and dependability. However, most of the welders used only brick, cast iron or G clamp for welding purposes that can be very risky and ineffective as the welding workpiece needs to be tightly secured because welding work can be very dangerous if the workpiece falls, despite the lowering of the welding accuracy. Thus, the objectives of this study are to design and develop a simulation for adjustable welding jigs through ASIE model application in refrigeration and air conditioning workshop and test its functionality using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The design and development process through the ASIE model consists of four phases, namely analysis, strategy, implementation and evaluation. This study used a design and development (DDR) research design that involved quantitative data in which the experts in the welding industry assess the product’s functionality through questionnaires. The population and sampling were selected randomly through the purposive sampling method in order to determine the respondents of the study. Overall, the documented experts’ evaluation explains the strengths and advantages in the design of the product. In addition, these adjustable welding jigs have made welding jobs easier, quicker, more accurate, comfortable and cost-efficient

On the latency and jitter evaluation of software defined networks

Conventional networking devices require that each is programmed with different rules to perform specific collective tasks. Next generation networks are required to be elastic, scalable and secured to connect millions of heterogeneous devices. Software defined networking (SDN) is an emerging network architecture that separates control from forwarding devices. This decoupling allows centralized network control to be done network-wide. This paper analyzes the latency and jitter of SDN against a conventional network. Through simulation, it is shown that SDN has an average three times lower jitter and latency per packet that translate to improved throughput under varying traffic conditions

Wireless water quality cloud monitoring system with self-healing algorithm

    Get PDF
The need of a water quality monitoring system is crucial for aquaculture and environmental control evaluation. This paper focuses on the development of the Water Quality (WQ) monitoring module that consists of hardware and software components. It highlights the details of the hardware components and the algorithm as well as the software that is connected to the cloud. There are many works on storing environmental data in cloud storage in Malaysia. The new platform to date for the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud database is Favoriot. Favoriot is a platform for IoT and machine-to-machine (M2M) development. For this project, Favoriot platform is used for real time data. The self-healing algorithm is design to reduce human intervention and continuous data collected in the remote areas. The result shows that the self-healing algorithm is able to recover itself without physical reseting, in case during distruption of wireless service connection failure

Cloud-To-Ground Lightning Flashes Under The Influence Of Pollution In Malaysia And Some Countries

The effect of air pollution produced from world war, industrial activities and transportation clearly can change the earth ecology system such as the atmospheric conditions. Base on few studies reported from by researcher in USA, Brazil, Spain and South Korea researcher have proven that the pollution effect can enhance the activity of lightning. Those information above motivate Advanced Multidisciplinary System Technology researcher in UTeM to report the cloud-to-ground lightning flashes in Malaysia the influence of pollution. Particulate Matter (PM10) and Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) concentration were used as gross indicator of Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN) and examined in relation to the urban increase in CG lightning activity. PM10 concentration recorded in Subang, Ipoh and Bayan Lepas were 51, 50 and 49μgm/m³ respectively. Meanwhile, SO2 concentration recorded were 8, 7.9, 7.7μgm/m³. The three urban areas have average number of CG lightning flashes of 200, 197 and 184. An analysis related number of CG flashes against pollutants show positive correlation in Malaysia with reading of 0.94. This indicates PM10 and SO2 concentration have high influential factor in enhancement of CG lightning activity in Malaysia
